Looking forward to dressing up in an elaborate and spooky costume? Have a massive sweet tooth and looking to satisfy a huge craving for an assortment of sweets? Or do you like to go out and about appreciate a late autumn horror movie? Well, fear not – Halloween is here and this festival has something for both child and adult alike.

To provide a quick overview, Halloween, which is a contraction of All Hallows’ Eve, is a celebration observed in a number of places on October 31st. The holiday is dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs and the faithfully departed.

While the origins of the festival are interesting, Halloween today has become a more commercial and secular holiday that allows everyone to have fun. One of the most anticipated activities during Halloween is dressing up in various costumes – usually an outfit that resembles characters and creatures that inspire fear. The tradition of dressing up comes from the belief that the barrier between living and dead would become porous on Halloween night, allowing spirits to enter and roam freely among the living. As a result, many people began to impersonate these spirits as a means to guard themselves or ward off their influence. Today, it has become a creative activity where people go to great lengths to impersonate their favourite characters or monsters.

However, one of the most eagerly awaited activities during the month of October is the trick-or-treating associated with Halloween.  The origins of trick or treating and dressing up were in the 16th century in Ireland, Scotland and Wales where people went door-to-door in costume asking for food in exchange for a poem or song. Today, the activity is a great opportunity for friends to go out together and collect an assortment of sweet treats from members of the community. Parents beware: this is a time when you need to be vigilant about the sacks of candied goods that enter your house, especially if your young one has designs to consume them in a short period of time.

Lastly, other Halloween activities include visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories, and watching horror films with friends and family – activities that can be enjoyed by everyone irrespective of their age. So on this occasion, we wish everyone a safe and happy Halloween!
